Making the Potomac Swimmable Again – Citizen Science Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program Has Started

Water Quality Monitoring Volunteer TrainingTo achieve our mission of improving recreation access, our Water Quality Monitoring Program is a key component of the Swimmable Potomac Campaign.

We rely on a dedicated team of volunteer citizen scientists who are rigorously trained by Potomac Riverkeeper and other skilled and knowledgeable professionals. The volunteers conduct weekly water sampling and testing from a host of sites along the river – DC, Maryland, and Virginia – and post the results in real-time on SwimGuide, the smartphone app for recreational users.

We have started this year’s testing, and we’re following all the necessary requirements for the safety of all involved.

We’ve expanded the scope of testing this year and so we need more volunteers. The training will be done virtually through a series of three modules, which will be posted soon.

Join us in making a difference – and making the Potomac swimmable again!
