This training is required for participation in the Citizen Science Water Quality Monitoring Program.

Potomac Riverkeeper Network is excited to host our second year of the water quality monitoring program on the Potomac River starting in the spring of 2020. Our volunteers routinely test multiple sites for E. coli levels. This type of bacteria serves as a water quality parameter for human health in recreational waters.

Bacterial data is made available to the public through the free smartphone app, SwimGuide. This will help river users stay informed about when it’s safe to be on the river by indicating if bacteria levels from sewage or stormwater are high enough to threaten public health. This monitoring initiative is one step towards our ultimate goal of making the river swimmable for all to use and enjoy!

Please park at Potomac Passage Parking Deck at the corner of Fleet St. and Potomac Passage at National Harbor in Oxon Hill, MD. Attendees will be provided with a voucher for free parking.

Sampling will begin May 6.
