RiverPalooza–Pedal to Paddle on the Upper Potomac


Experience the best of both worlds on the Potomac River, the C&O Canal and the river itself. You will enjoy a bike ride up the C&O Canal, part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail and a river paddle down the Potomac to where you started.

Bikes will be available to rent, for ages 8 and above, or bring your own. We can shuttle your bike back to your car.

We will meet and register at the boat launch in Shepherdstown, WV. We will bike through Shepherdstown, across the Potomac and up the C&O canal to Snyder’s Landing. Then you will jump into your rental kayak or canoe and float back to Lock 38. Then you can enjoy an evening in Shepherdstown for great food and entertainment.

Please bring a packed lunch and water. (Extra water will be available during the float)


Outfitter: River and Trails

Arrival Location: Shepherdstown’s Boat Launch. If you are bringing you own boat, please drop off your boat with the lead volunteer at Snyder’s Landing before arriving at registration.

Arrival Time: Registration: 9 to 9:30 am

    • Bike Start: 10 am
    • BYO-boat participants: drop off your boat with Lead volunteer at Snyder’s Landing before arriving at registration.

Experience Level and Distance:

    • Biking: Family route along C&O canal; easy; 4.6 miles;
    • Boating: easy, 4.1 miles
    • Ages for bike rentals: 8 yrs old and up
    • Kayak and canoe rental:
      • 14 to 17 yrs old can rent a kayak with a registered adult,
      • Children 8 to 13 must be accompanied by an adult in a canoe.

Trip Options and Cost:

    • Bring your own-Bike and Boat = $40
    • Bring your own-Bike + Canoe Rental = $65 + $25 registration cost for passenger (No 3rd person)
    • Bring your own-Bike + Kayak Rental = $65
    • Bike and Canoe Rental = $75 + $25 registration cost for passenger (No 3rd person)
    • Rent both Bike and Kayak = $75

Optional activities: Camping at Antietam C&O campgrounds (first come first serve), Hotel at the Bavarian Inn, Shopping and dining in Historic Shepherdstown, WV or Sharpsburg, MD; Tour of Antietam Battlefield.

EVERY PADDLE PARTICIPANT must print, fill out and bring their ACA waiver with them on the day of the event. Depending on your trip, you may also need to bring an outfitter waiver. Please see your confirmation email for details.
