Paddle Trip: “The Needles” – Whitewater Paddle on the Potomac

Just above Harpers Ferry is a unique section of river called “The Needles” that is a favorite for whitewater paddlers and anglers alike. About a dozen paddlers joined the Potomac Riverkeeper and Upper Potomac Riverkeeper to enjoy the beauty of the Blue Ridge. We paddled waves and whitewater through a series of rapids in The Needles. We took in the history and scenery of the Potomac River as we floated past Harpers Ferry National Historic Park and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal down to the confluence, where the Shenandoah River joins the mighty Potomac between the soaring cliffs of Maryland and Loudon Heights! We had a great ride through the snarl of the Mad Dog and the wild White Horse rapid. It was a beautiful and exciting trip for everyone! (Class I-III Rapids)
