SATURDAY, JUNE 18TH: FULL MOON PADDLE - EDWARDS FERRY TO SENECA CREEK
in Poolesville, MD
Ok, technically the moon wasn't totally full but a 93% full moon was good enough for over 60 paddlers to enjoy an evening paddle with the Potomac Riverkeeper on this wide and lazy stretch of river. And the weather was perfect! Located on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, Edwards Ferry is at milepost 30 where a ferry operated from 1791 until 1836. Edwards Ferry was the site of a large Union crossing on the way to Gettysburg in June 1863. This part of the Potomac River is 8 miles of placid, gently flowing currents from Edward's Ferry all the way down to Seneca Creek Park at Riley's Lock, making it the perfect stretch for even beginner paddlers to enjoy a full moon paddle. Paddlers also enjoyed a beautiful sunset from the river, one of the best times to see wildlife. Edwards Ferry has a large boat ramp that is a popular spot for smallmouth bass fishing.
