Saturday, June 11 -Sunday, June 12: Paw paw bends paddle & overnight camping
in Oldtown, MD
Two dozen people joined Upper Potomac Riverkeeper on an iconic float through the entrenched meandering Paw Paw Bends along the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. The Paw Paw Bends are the classic signature of the Upper Potomac. The rural, almost wild like scenery and sky high rocky cliffs literally feels like a walk back in time. This two day trip left from Paw Paw, WV, camping at Bond’s Landing at the edge of the Green Ridge State Forest and ended at the 15 Mile Creek campground on the C&O Canal.
Our trip began with a special tour of the Paw Paw tunnel on the C&O Canal, followed by a beautiful paddle through Paw Paw Bends. Dinner was provided by Virginia BBQ on Saturday night at Bond’s Landing where we set up camp and ate around an open campfire. A black snake slithered through the campground on Sunday morning as a wake up call, especially to the kids! A light breakfast was available on Sunday along with a “make your own” packed lunch buffet.
We had fantastic weather. As you can see by the photos, we swam and played in the river, as well as paddled. Thanks to Mike Dudash who guided us each day, with his educational and reflective opportunities.
