friday, June 10th:  Shenandoah River birdwatch & paddle

in Front Royal, VA

Trip Description:

A dozen paddlers and birdwatchers joined the Shenandoah Riverkeeper for a gentle and beautiful float down the Shenandoah River. We put in at the Andy Guest Shenandoah River State Park and floated down to the Karo Landing. Accompanying us on this trip were two avid birders from the Potomac Valley Audubon Society and who helped us identify the birds and waterfowl we saw along the way.  Easy riffles and deeper pools that were perfect for anyone wanting to wet a line in pursuit of smallmouth bass characterize this stretch.

We witnessed a black snake going after a hummingbird's nest and we watched, with our mouths agape, a young black bear plunge into the river from an island and swim across a back channel to the mainland and we were not even 10 yards away from the put in!!!
