Nathan Ackerman joined Potomac Riverkeeper Network's staff in 2017 as Director of Communications. Nathan leads PRKN's communications, media and outreach efforts to support our Riverkeepers' advocacy and legal initiatives and our on-the-water events for our members. Nathan Ackerman has worked in strategic communication and media for 25 years, primarily for progressive organizations, candidates and campaigns. His passion for the outdoors was formed through childhood adventures on the Clearfork and Ohio Rivers as well as family canoe trips down the Shenandoah.
Ackerman began his professional career as a campaign organizer for the League of Conservation Voters, and was on the brink of studying environmental law when he was offered a position with ABC NEWS. At ABC he pitched and developed stories on the environment and contributed to breaking national news stories. He produced several stories that aired nationally before being recruited to help create a state of the art communication shop for the US Senate Democratic Leadership under Senator Tom Daschle and future Obama Chief of Staff Pete Rouse.
Since leaving the Hill, Ackerman has crafted award winning advocacy and advertising campaigns on behalf of Fortune 50, association and non-profit clients. His work has been recognized by several top Pollie, Telly and American Marketing Association Awards and HBO’s Media That Matters Film Festival. He has lectured on communication at George Washington University and American University.
Ackerman spends his free time hiking, biking, seeing live music and advocating for DC voting rights. He is serving his first term as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (ANC1B05).
