Curious as to what is below the water? Got a bit of pirate in you and want to look for sunken treasure? Or maybe you want to geek out and see how many fish species you can identify and learn about the critters swimming on the bottom. Oh, and you want to run the best whitewater, albeit Shenandoah whitewater, too. Well, you’re in luck; this is the trip for you! We are going to do a quick 4.5-mile float from J.R.’s Campground, and shoot through Compton Rapids, and then pull over at Golden Rock Campground immediately below the rapids for an afternoon of snorkeling. Lots of boats dump going through Compton Rapids so who knows what we’ll find or see.
Our good friends at the US Forest Service and North Bay Adventure are working with us to help make for a very fun and educational day on the river. The fee includes the use of the canoe/kayak and the snorkeling gear (goggles/snorkel – bring your own fins if you need/want them).
This is normally the time we’ll have low/clear conditions so it should make for a great day of paddling and snorkeling! We will be using Golden Rock Campground as our snorkeling staging point, so pack a beach towel, pack a lunch and enjoy a day on the beautiful Shenandoah River with your Shenandoah Riverkeeper! Come join us for this part of Potomac Riverkeeper Network’s RiverPalooza 2017: our celebration of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers with an emphasis on the important work of keeping the waters clean.
